A new research article is accepted in Weather, Climate, and Society. The title of the article is "Monitoring of Drought Awareness from Google Trends: A Case Study of the 2011–17 California Drought" [link].
In this study, we investigated potential triggers of the peaks of drought awareness and characterized the decay patterns after the peaks of drought awareness during the 2011-17 California Drought via Google Trends.
The key findings of this study are
  1. There are four peaks of drought awareness during the 2011-17 California Drought with a gap (longer than one year) between the onset of the 2011-17 CA drought and the first peak.
  2. The potential triggers of drought awareness varied from natural and human factors depending on the stage of drought.
  3. Human factors drive a slower decay process of drought awareness than natural factors.
